The ProSocial Matrix

What if it was also possible to use conflict to your advantage in the workplace?

A recent article in Forbes entitled "How To Use Conflict To Your Advantage at Work", suggests that conflicts can actually help an organization when managed properly.

The word conflict tends to create some uncomfortable thoughts and feelings when it shows up. But isn't conflict really a difference of opinion?  And don't we want to encourage differences of opinions to be expressed in order to stimulate new ideas and creativity?  Conflicts force us to look at things from another person's perspective, which can open our minds to a more innovative approach to the task at hand.

In ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), we call this transformation Psychological Flexibility. And the Prosocial Matrix is an evidence based tool designed to create Psychological Flexibility, to help your teams work cooperatively and to their full potential.

Maintaining a work environment that promotes creativity can be challenging at times.  Since we all have our own ideas, conflicts should be expected.  But, conflicts can also be destructive to the work environment. When not handled properly, it can cost your organization thousands of dollars, impede creativity, and bring production to a halt.

Staggering Facts:

  • 85% of U.S. employees experience conflict and spend 2.8 hours/week dealing with it.

  • This amounts to $359 billion in paid hours per year based on the average salary

  • 75% of employees have experienced the affects of workplace bullying either as a target or witness

  • 25% of employees said that they avoiding conflict led to sickness or absence from work

  • 10% reported that conflict led to project failure

  • Turnover costs average anywhere between 75%-150% of an employees annual salary

One of the primary problems is that most of us have not been trained in how to effectively manage conflict situations.  This needs to happen on both the managerial and the employee levels.
